Behold, God is my Helper
The Lord is the upholder of my life.
Psalm 54:4
I was encouraged this past Wednesday night as a number of us gathered here at Rockport to pray. With all that’s going on in our world, it was a help to me, spiritually, to hear my brother and sisters raise their voices in unity to ask God for help! And then to know, based on His sure promises, that when we cry to Him He hears us and comes to aid in our time of need. (Ps 145:18)
We’re going to need that reminder, I think. Every indication is that the times ahead could be perilous, humanly speaking. But as we pray, we are reminded that we are not left with “humanly speaking,” for God has spoken in His word and hears us speak as we pray. So when we make our needs known to Him, we do so in confidence that He hears, that His mercy still reigns, His sovereignty still rules and our future is secure in His hands.
In Psalm 54:4 (above) David reminds himself that the God who upholds him is near. Notice how he says to himself, “Look! (That’s what “behold” means). “Look up there!” He says to himself. “Look up and see that God is reigning, that He is my Helper and the One who upholds me!” By “upholds” he means that God is someone we can always lean on. He is steadfast and immovable. He won’t give way under the weight of our burdens. He’s able to take them from us and carry them, just as Peter reminds us when he says “cast all your burdens on Him, because He cares for you” (1 Pet 5:7). This is the God to whom we come! This is also what He promises in the New Testament when Jesus pledges to send the Holy Spirit to be our “Helper” who will come to our aid, stand beside us and carry us through thick and thin. By the grace of God we have all we need for this and every day, through Him.
Praying for you in confidence of God’s faithfulness in Christ!
