Simon Peter answered Jesus, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
John 6:68-69
So where do you turn in times like these? In whom do you place your trust? Ultimately, it can’t be in government. Governments, as we’ve seen, are always changing. And even the best governments, because they’re made up of sinful people like us, ultimately fail to deliver on their promises (Psa 146:3). And though it is true that a man (or woman) is blessed who has friends, even the best of friends can fall short. Sadly, there are times even friends will betray you (Psa 41:9). And certainly, we can’t just look to ourselves. How often has your own heart deceived you? (Jer 17:9). So where can we turn?
Peter knew the answer (See John 6:68-69 above). As we’ll see in this morning’s message, Peter speaks these words to Jesus just as many were beginning to turn away from Him because they thought his message was too difficult, too demanding. That’s when Jesus asked the disciples, “Do you want to go away as well?” But Peter knew the right answer. “Lord to whom shall we go? You (alone) have the words of eternal life!” In all this temporary, broken world there is no one else who can give us the life Jesus alone possesses. There are others we might try to put our hope in. But they are sorry substitutes at best. The very best they can give is always temporary and second rate compared to what he gives. And so Peter isn’t falling for it. He won’t run to Caesar, or even to his good friend John. Peter is determined to hold fast to Christ no matter what the cost. No matter who leaves or strays. Because Peter has found in Christ alone all He needs for life and eternity. How about you? Have you found that it is worth losing everything and everyone just to have Christ?
May God give us grace to trust Christ as revealed in His Word
