“God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.””
1 Cor 1:9
Since Amy and I will not be with you this morning, I thought I might use this space to remind you of this basic and all-important truth – “God is faithful.” It’s so important that you remember that. Indeed, you ought to remind yourself of this truth every day – “God is faithful!” When you get up in the morning, first thing even before you grab a cup of coffee, stop and say to yourself, “Whatever may happen today this much I know – My God is faithful!”
So what does “faithful” mean? The word used in the original is “pistos”. It’s a word indicating that something or someone is “trustworthy, worthy of being believed, dependable, known to inspire trust, certain not to betray, sure, steadfast, able to be relied upon.” All these describe Who God is in everything He does. He is trustworthy. He is reliable. He is dependable. Come what may His word can be trusted, His promises will not fail, His purposes will stand.
These are truths that are vital to remember in a world like ours, when the call comes at midnight bringing devastating news; when a loved one lies in a hospital bed hooked to tubes, clinging to life; when the doctor says “It’s cancer!”; when a child walks away from the faith; when the job is lost; when the future seems uncertain; or when life feels unbearable. All the things that make us fear, that makes us sad, that make life seem uncertain – all of them are ques for us to turn once again to the Scriptures and to the church’s long history (and even our own experience of His grace) and remind ourselves again that “God is faithful.”
How have you experienced God’s faithfulness? Where do you need to be reminded of it this morning? Are you being tempted to forget? Let me urge you, look up to Him and remember! Look away from your present circumstance, fix your eyes on Jesus, and remember that ‘He is faithful.’
Looking forward to being back home with you next week!
