“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.”
John 1:1
People talk about making ‘bucket lists’ – those things they want to accomplish before they “kick the bucket.” I don’t know what you think about such things, some are just silly. But if I had a bucket list, “Preaching a series through the Gospel of John” would certainly be on it (Are you surprised?). So, as far as I’m concerned this is a big day as we begin this study together.
John’s opening paragraph is unique among the four gospels in the way it begins. While the other gospels begin in time with the earthly life of Jesus (Mark at Christ’s baptism, Luke and Matthew with news of His virgin birth), John’s gospel stretches back into eternity to consider Who Jesus is (and has been) from the beginning. In fact, in these first five verses we begin with this morning, John lays down three of the major themes that will pulsate through this book: the Deity of Christ; the Eternal Life He alone can give; and the power of the Light he brings to overcome the darkness of this world.
As we begin our study, let me encourage you to take time to begin to read through John’s Gospel. As you do, look for these themes and how they begin to paint a picture of Who Christ is, Why He came and Why it matters! Ask yourself as you read, “Do I believe these things?” And “What difference will believing these things make in my life both now and for all eternity?” For this book was written, above all, to change your life! The author says in John 20:21 that “these things are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” Do you have this life? That’s something you can know for certain by putting your trust in the One revealed in these pages! So I’m really looking forward to our study as we plunge the depths this Word in the coming months.
Standing in awe of His Majesty revealed in John’s Gospel!
