An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels. (Prov 31:10)

If parents are so important (and they are), then why don’t we make a bigger deal out of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day at Rockport? I hope you understand that I love my parents very much – more than I could ever say, especially since my dad’s passing five years ago. So I do think it’s a good idea for us to set aside a day each year to honor our parents and tell them how much we love them. My concern, however, comes with the tendency I see in many places to take a day like Mother’s Day and make it the focus of our worship on the Lord’s Day. It seems to be a misappropriation of God’s honor when we shift the focus of any worship service off of Christ and put it on anyone or anything else.
Then there’s the practical concern. When it gets down to it, I’m convinced that what you and I need is not another warm and fuzzy, feel-good experience or a ‘sentimental journey’ sponsored by Hallmark. What we need is to have the life-strengthening, soul-anchoring power of God’s Word opened up to us and faithfully applied to our lives as parents, children, grandparents and singles!

So, if you are able, take a moment today to say ‘Thank you’ to your mom for all she means to you. If you no longer can because she is gone, then give thanks to God for her. And let’s acknowledge that there is no other job we can imagine that is more important than that of a godly parent. Let’s shout from the rooftops, “We love you, Mom and we’re grateful to God for you! But then for mom’s sake, let’s shift the focus off of her (and off ourselves for that matter) and set it firmly on Him who created motherhood and families and life and joy in the first place. And let’s offer our prayers up to our Father in Heaven Who alone can give Mom (and us) everything we truly need! What a blessing to have good parents! But what an even greater blessing to have a good God we can go to!

Thankful to God for every faithful mom!
